Looking Back at 2013

I made one New Years resolution in 2012, and that was to make 2013 the year of (mostly) selfish knitting. For the first time ever I (mostly) succeeded in keeping my resolution.

In 2013, I knitted 8.10 MILES of yarn. That’s 14, 256 yards. 42,768 feet. 513,216 inches. 13,035.7 meters if you prefer metric. That’s a lot of yarn.  What does that make??

  • 1 shrug
  • 7 pairs of mittens and fingerless gloves
  • 11 hats
  • 1 bag
  • 7 sweaters
  • 8 stuffed animals
  • 1 pair of baby leg warmers
  • 3 cowls/scarves
  • 1 pair of slippers
  • 6 shawls
  • and 2 dishcloths
I’m going to have to knit faster in 2014 if I want to put a REAL dent in this stash…

Everything Gets Finished. Eventually.

wavy cardi late startAccording to Ravelry, I queued the Drawstring Raglan from Interweave Knits, Summer 2008 on October 24, 2009. That’s not entirely accurate. I’m pretty sure I was on the lookout for yarn for it the previous summer. In any case, I’ve been eyeballing this pattern for a long time. Every spring, I would go back and look at it, do some internet yarn window shopping and then move on to other projects.

So did you know that Tuesday Morning carries yarn? They do! And it’s good yarn! Wool, alpaca, silk, cotton, some novelty but for the most part it’s good name brand yarns. Early this summer I had managed to run away from home for a couple of hours and popped into Tuesday Morning to see if they had anything new. That’s where I found at least a dozen colors of Louisa Harding Ianthe, a 50/50 cotton and extra fine merino wool blend. And at a price I couldn’t refuse. So nearly four years later, I finally cast on for my blue Wavy Cardi.

It’s been slow going. I’ve abandoned it repeatedly for other smaller, faster projects. Even though the yarn was bouncy for a cotton blend, it still slowed me down. And lets be honest, once I got past the feather and fan skirt, it was a LOT of stockinette. Not the most thrilling knitting. But finally, Friday, in the school pick-up line, I finished the knitting. Just one thing I didn’t give a lot of thought to: that’s a lot of ends to weave in! I hate weaving in ends.

But I want to wear this, so I will finish it.

Eventually.
